Sam Smith has shared an inspiring post announcing their gender pronoun changes.

The Academy Award-winning 'Writing's on the Wall' singer shared earlier in the year that they identify as non-binary, explaining that they are "somewhere in between" defined genders.

Smith opened up to fans a bit more about this on Friday, following a series of tabloid reports. The musician clarified that their preferred pronouns are 'they'/'them' – and then explained a bit about the journey they've been on.

"Today is a good day so here goes. I've decided I am changing my pronouns to THEY/THEM. After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out," Smith wrote.

"I'm so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision but I've been very nervous about announcing this because I care too much about what people think but f**k it!

"I understand there will be many mistakes and mis-gendering but all I ask is you please please try. I hope you can see me like I see myself now. Thank you."

Smith also acknowledged that they are not yet ready to fully discuss their experience as non-binary, but remain hopeful they'll be able to share more in the future.

"I am at no stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non-binary but I can't wait for the day that I am," they wrote.

"So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open. If you have questions and are wondering what this all means I'll try my best to explain… Love you all. I'm scared shitless, but feeling super free right now. Be kind."

Smith also shared some activists who had been supportive on their journey:

Career-wise, Smith has been riding high off the release of their latest single 'How Do You Sleep?', which hit the top ten in the UK over the summer.
