Sam Smith ends Manchester show after 4 songs, cancels UK dates due to vocal cord injury

After abruptly pulling the plug midway through a concert Wednesday night, Sam Smith has called off additional tour dates due to a vocal cord injury.

The singer-songwriter ended Wednesday’s show at Manchester’s AO Arena after just four songs, later announcing the cancellation of two more UK concert dates in Birmingham, England and Glasgow, Scotland.

“Sam is heartbroken to have had to cancel these shows but they have been told by doctors that if they keep singing, they will do permanent damage to their voice,” read a statement shared on Twitter. “If they take some rest, they will be able to perform again.”

“Dearest sailors, I don’t know what to say honestly,” the 31-year-old “Unholy” singer wrote in an Instagram Story. “I fought off a virus a few weeks ago and since then we have travelled across Europe and had such incredible shows. Today in soundcheck I felt fine and was so excited to give Manchester an amazing show.”

Smith, who has been on tour to promote the recently released “Gloria” opus, went on to explain that they “noticed something wrong” while performing the third song.

“I prayed it was just my voice waking up for the show, but into the fourth song I could feel something was really wrong,” the “Stay With Me” crooner continued. “I came off stage and have tried everything to get my voice back in gear but it won’t. I am honestly heartbroken I couldn’t finish the show tonight for you all.”

The superstar has previously struggled with their vocal cords. In 2015, Smith underwent surgery in Boston to stop recurrent vocal cord bleeding.
