🌱 Sameday Health Test Refunds + Big Rig Loaded With Fish Burns On 5

Hey, people of Los Angeles; today is National Audubon Day! It's me again, Sylvia, your host of the Los Angeles Daily.

If you paid Sameday Health out of pocket for a COVID test, you may be eligible for a refund. Also, there was a vehicle and cargo fire on the 5. Finally, a bike lane is making progress on 1st Street.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 81 Low: 55.

Here are the top five stories today in Los Angeles:

  1. Fraudulent COVID Testing Update: Last week, we talked about the settlement between L.A. and Sameday Health. On Monday, there was the announcement that “Californians who paid out of pocket for a PCR test between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2020 are expected to be refunded by the company.” If you were tested outside that timeframe or didn’t get test results by the advertised deadline, you may also be eligible for a refund. 2. Did you smell it? On Monday, at around 12:52 a.m., a “big rig loaded with 21,000 pounds of fish crashed into a sedan and both vehicles caught fire early on the 5 Freeway just south of the Arroyo Seco (110) Parkway.” According to witnesses, there was a blue low-rider involved in the collision. We learned that “there was no indication of any fatalities.” (The Eastsider L.A.)

  3. If you routinely bike from Little Tokyo to Boyle Heights, you will notice that there’s a new protected bike lane on 1st Street. We learned on Monday that “right now, the project is only on the westbound lane, heading into downtown.” (L.A. Streets Blog)

  4. If you have a hankering for 45-day dry-aged beef, head to Prime Rib in Beverly Hills or Tam O’Shanter in Atwater Village. Both restaurants typically serve “non-aged Certified Angus beef,” but they will have the specialty aged meat until May 1. If you miss out, your only option is to visit “Fanny’s at the new Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.” (L.A. Eater)

  5. We hit a temperature record on Sunday. At Los Angeles International Airport, the high was 86 degrees Fahrenheit. This is higher than the 85-degree record we set in 2020. (NWS)
