Who should be the Sames Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week?

There were numerous eye-popping all-around football performances last week and several are among the finalists for the Sames Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week.

The Caller-Times is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

Falfurrias athlete JaMarcus Jones pulled off a rare feat, passing for 114 yards and two scores, running for 102 yards and catching three passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns in a win against Monte Alto. On defense, he picked off three passes and three tackles.

Taft's JJ Acosta continued his impressive start to the season with 360 yards passing and 145 yards rushing against Three Rivers.

Gregory-Portland's Reed Dooms and Three Rivers' Caden Soliz each had six touchdown passes in wins last week.

THIS WEEK'S NOMINEES

• JJ Acosta, Taft football — Acosta threw for 360 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 145 yards and a score for the Greyhounds against Three Rivers.

• Brandon Chapa, Ray football — Chapa ran 18 times for 208 yards and two scores as the Texans improved to 3-0.

• Reed Dooms, Gregory-Portland football — In his second career start, Dooms was 17 of 20 for 293 yards passing and six touchdowns in the Wildcats win against Victoria East.

• Aaron Flores, Banquete football — Flores helped Banquete overcome a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit with three touchdowns on 12 carries for 201 yards as the Bulldogs improved to 3-0.

• Harlie Gallaspy, Flour Bluff volleyball — Gallaspy paced the Hornets to sweeps of London and Gregory-Portland with 60 assists, 19 digs and four aces in two matches last week.

• JaMarcus Jones, Falfurrias football — A jack-of-all-trades for the Jerseys, Jones was 4 of 6 passing for 114 yards and two touchdowns, caught three passes for 129 yards and two scores and ran twice for 101 yards in a win against Monte Alto. He added three interceptions and three tackles on defense in the victory.

• Caden Soliz, Three Rivers football — Soliz complete 22 of 30 passes for 316 yards and six touchdowns and ran for 42 yards as the Bulldogs improved to 3-0.

• Ethan Ybarra, Mathis football — Ybarra led the Pirates to their second straight come-from-behind win with 228 yards rushing on 25 carries including three touchdowns and one 2-point conversion.
