Who should be the Sames Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week?

After a break for the holiday season, the Sames Caller-Times High School Athlete of the Week voting returns this week with several strong finalists.

The Caller-Times is taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close on Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

London's Egemen Van Niekerk and Ingleside's Brandon Hernandez each snared tournament MVP honors for their respective teams last week in boys soccer tournaments. Van Niekerk was named MVP at the La Grange Tournament and Hernandez was MVP of Ingleside's War at the Stable.

Kristopher Jones set two Port Aransas school records with 11 3-pointers and 51 points in a district win against Refugio.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at ctsports@caller.com, by messaging the Caller-Times through its Facebook page, or on Twitter @CallerSports.

THIS WEEK'S NOMINEES

• Ty Dominguez, Kingsville boys basketball — Dominguez had a 32-point game, including six rebounds, four assists and four steals against Laredo Harmony, and scored 59 points over a two-game span in district play for the Brahmas.

• Jackie Garcia, Mathis girls basketball — Garcia poured in 26 points, six rebounds and four rsteals in a win against Marion and added a near triple-double against Taft with 14 points, nine rebounds and nine steals.

• Brandon Hernandez, Ingleside boys soccer — Hernandez was named MVP of the War at the Stable Tournament hosted by Ingleside, scoring three goals in regulation and then converting the game-winning penalty kick in a shootout in a win against Calallen in the championship match.

• Jacoby James, Sinton boys basketball — The Pirates sophomore score 26 points with 11 rebounds, four steals and two blocks in a non-district game against state-ranked London.

• Hezekiah Johnson, Moody boys basketball — Johnson scored 23 points in a key zone victory against Carroll.

• Kristopher Jones, Port Aransas boys basketball — Jones set two Port A school records by connecting for 11 3-pointers in a 51-point outburst against Refugio.

• Egemen Van Niekerk, London boys soccer — The senior leader for the Pirates scored five goals and added an assist on his way to tournament MVP honors in La Grange as London captured the title with a 4-0-1 record.

• Miryna Villarreal, Premont girls basketball — Villarreal scored 32 points in Premont's win against Santa Maria.
