Samsung boss could end up in jail, again

The Samsung company's boss, Jay Y. Lee, could be facing more prison time.

Because South Korea's Supreme Court has overturned part of a bribery case against him.

The question is what constitutes a bribe.

Specifically, three horses - gifted by the Samsung group to a friend of former President Park Geun-hye - and whether it was aimed at winning the president's favor.

A lower appeals court originally said the act was not a bribe, but the Supreme Court now says that the lower court's definition of "bribe" was too narrow, and has asked them to reconsider it.

Lee was handed five years of imprisonment in 2015, but was ultimately freed after only a year.

Thursday's (August 29) new Supreme Court decision and the prospect of a return to prison casts further doubt on whether Lee can steer Samsung through difficult times.

Including falling profits, and Japanese export curbs on the materials used in chipmaking.

Prosecutors say Lee was trying to curry favor so that he could succeed his father as head of Samsung.

Lee denies any wrongdoing.
