Samsung foldable phone, 'Judy' hits theaters, Global Climate Strike: 5 things to know Friday

Second Climate Strike set for Friday

The second of two Global Climate Strikes drawing attention to Monday's United Nations' Global Climate Summit is scheduled Friday, a week after millions of people marched seeking action on climate change. In an associated effort, a group of 16 children from five continents, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, have filed a groundbreaking legal complaint against five countries. If successful the lawsuit would require the countries (Argentina, Brazil, France, Turkey and Germany) to change laws to amplify the fight against climate change. As for the strike, Vox reports that New York schools won't excuse student absences this time, while in Washington, activisits there may block roads as they did earlier this week.

Samsung's foldable phone on sale in U.S.

Samsung’s long-delayed Galaxy Fold smartphone is finally on sale in the U.S., which began selling South Korea earlier this month. Friday's launch of the Fold was postponed this past April after early reviewers complained of problems with the folding display. The smartphone features a 4.6-inch front display when folded, and a 7.3-inch display when unfolded. Samsung claims to have fixed the earlier problems. The Fold has been redesigned with new materials and technologies. However, Samsung will still have to make the case for the device, especially with a price tag just shy of $2,000, not exactly a mainstream sum.

It may be September, but it will feel like winter in the Rockies

Heavy snow — up to 3 feet in some areas — and temperatures in the 20s and 30s will bring an early taste of winter to portions of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming starting Friday. In the mountains and intermediate elevations, 1-2 feet of snow is forecast, AccuWeather said, and up to 40 inches is possible in some parts of northwestern Montana. Blizzard conditions with gusts up to 40 mph will be possible in Great Falls, Montana, the National Weather Service warned, adding that the storm could cause extensive power outages, crop damage, and travel disruptions. Meanwhile, folks in the southeastern USA could see record high temperatures in some areas.

Will we see a new Kanye album Friday? Kim K. says 'yes'; others aren't sure

Earlier this month, rapper Kanye West shared that his long-delayed ninth studio album would be titled "Jesus is King" and released Sept. 27. And while West's wife, Kim Kardashian West, has spent the past week tweeting about the new album out Friday, fans are less sure that new music will actually arrive as they are more than accustomed to the rapper announcing releases, and then delaying them, or not releasing them at all. Some hip-hop followers have predicted West won't be releasing an album, while devoted fans believe the new music will come out as promised. The album announcement followed months of his Sunday Service performances, with West saying the latest traveling session would be held in Detroit on Friday.

'Judy' opens in theaters

Renée Zellweger did her emotional research into Judy Garland before playing the screen legend in "Judy," which opens nationwide in theaters Friday. The Oscar-winning actress says she lived her life consumed with Garland for two years preparing for the role. It's a journey that often left Zellweger in tears over the troubled "Wizard of Oz" star, who died of an accidental overdose in 1969 at age 47. "Judy" takes place in the emotionally tumultuous winter of 1968, a year before her death, when Garland arrives in London to perform a five-week sold-out run at The Talk of the Town. The movie also travels back in time to Garland's childhood as a young starlet.
