Samsung Galaxy Fold release date delayed

For those of you looking forward to pre-ordering the shiny new Samsung Galaxy Fold this week, we have some bad news for you – you might have to wait a little longer.

Pre-orders for the $2,000 phone have already gone online and sold out (within hours) in the US, but the Korean company has decided to delay sales of the foldable phone because reviewers keep breaking them.

Early reviews of the smartphone in America showed the screen was actually pretty easy to break, and that debris and clutter can get trapped in the screen's hinge, damaging the display.

For UK shoppers, EE was the exclusive network to pre-order the Galaxy Fold, but we are still waiting to find out how long the delay will be – and it could be as long as a couple of weeks.

The handset – which costs £1,800 – is also yet to receive any contract prices from EE, so we don't even know how much it would cost you on a month-to-month basis.

Unfortunately, details are scarce, so it's unclear whether customers will receive refunds if they have already pre-ordered the phone, as Samsung has said that it will be rescheduling the release "in the coming weeks".

In response to the delay, a Samsung spokesperson said: "We recently unveiled a completely new mobile category – a smartphone using multiple new technologies and materials to create a display that is flexible enough to fold. We are encouraged by the excitement around the Galaxy Fold.

"While many reviewers shared with us the vast potential they see, some also showed us how the device needs further improvements that could ensure the best possible user experience. To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold. We plan to announce the release date in the coming weeks.

"Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.

"We will take measures to strengthen the display protection. We will also enhance the guidance on care and use of the display including the protective layer so that our customers get the most out of their Galaxy Fold."

The issues with the Fold seem to be down to two problems: a screen protector and the hinge.

As mentioned, it is apparently super easy to get dirt, debris and other stuff stuck in the hinge mechanic, blocking the gears and stopping it from clicking together.

We have all had fluff or dirt get stuck in the headphone jacks on other phones, so this isn't a new problem, which makes it strange if Samsung didn't factor this in during testing.

The other problem is less Samsung's fault and more an issue with US reviewers being too over-zealous.

It turns out the Fold releases with a thin layer on the display that looks exactly like a screen protector, but it is actually PART OF THE SCREEN, and should not be removed.

Reviewers had been peeling this layer off, thinking it was a protector, and damaging the display. They claimed that there was no warning from Samsung not to do so, but Samsung can hardly be blamed for that problem.

These issues will more than likely push the Galaxy Fold release date until at least the summer, but the phone developers will be hoping to get the Fold out to consumers before its closest rival, the Huawei Mate X, releases as well.
