San Angelo Central Bobcats suffer first district loss of the year at Midland Legacy

San Angelo Central High School's Keevon Rice returns a kickoff against Abilene Wylie during a nondistrict football game at San Angelo Stadium on Friday, Sept. 23, 2022.

It's not quite Halloween, but the San Angelo Central High School Bobcats might have nightmares about Zeke Luna.

The Midland Legacy running back ran for 234 yards and four touchdowns, as the defending District 2-6A champions rolled to a 56-29 win Friday night at Astound Broadband Stadium in Midland.

The Bobcats saw their four-game winning streak get snapped and suffered their first district loss of the season.

Legacy improved to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in district, while Central dropped to 5-3 and 2-1.

"They were good," Central head coach Kevin Crane said. "They had so much size and they played well. We made a few too many mistakes offensively. They're a good football team."

Central and Frenship entered the night tied for first, but after the Tigers lost 42-41 to Odessa Permian, there's a four-way tie for first between Legacy, Central, Frenship and Permian.

The loss overshadowed a great passing performance by Central senior quarterback Tyler Hill, who completed 21 of 43 passes for a career-high 378 yards and three TDs against two picks. He threw a 50-yard scoring strike to Jacob English, and two to Jacob Gallegos (13 and 15 yards). Hill also ran for a score.

The Bobcats' leading receiver was Tyler Walker, who snagged three receptions for 109 yards.

Gallegos finished with four receptions for 56 yards, and English had two for 55.

Central place-kicker Chase Miller connected on a 37-yard field goal.

Legacy quarterback Marcos Davila, a junior who is being recruited by numerous Division-I programs, completed 20 of 28 passes for 303 yards and two scores. He was picked off once.

The Rebels led 35-16 at the half.

The Bobcats amassed 422 yards total offense, but allowed 642.

Legacy churned out 339 yards on the ground, and Luna did most of the damage.

"It was tough," Crane said. "He's a good player. The offensive line is very big and physical. And when you put too many people in there to stop him, they're going to hurt you with the passing game. The quarterback was able to throw the ball and he had good protection and he had some receivers open."

Legacy head coach Clint Hartman knew his defense would be tested.

"Their quarterback, he’s good," the Rebels coach said of Hill. "He can run and he can throw. They’ve always been really, really good on offense. Tonight our offense was just a little bit better. They’re a well-coached football team.

"That’s going to be a playoff team and they’re the type of team, they're going to win another one or two. They might win the next two and beat Frenship. You never know. But Coach Crane and those guys do a great job."

The Rebels were coming off a 33-25 win against previously undefeated Permian last week.

Central will try to get back on track next Friday when the Bobcats host Permian at San Angelo Stadium.

"We've got to watch the film and learn from it and move on to the next one," the Central coach said.
