San Angelo Central senior swimmer Fentress qualifies for state

San Angelo Central High School senior Cody Fentress punched his ticket to state with a runnerup finish and a new school record in the boys' 200-yard freestyle at the Region I-6A Swimming & Diving Championships in Mansfield on Tuesday.

Fentress turned in a time of 1 minute, 41.60 seconds. Keller High's Cooper Lucas established a new regional record with a winning mark of 1:38.00.

Matt Brewer, who competed at Texas Christian University, set the previous school record in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.94 in 2015.

In the team standings, the Central boys finished eighth and the Lady Cats were ninth.

The top two finishers in each individual race and relay and the next-eight fastest times from the four regions qualify for the 6A state meet at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin on Feb. 18-19.

In his other individual event, Fentress placed fifth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.83 seconds.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Fentress teamed up with fellow seniors Caleb Peacock, Brayden Brewer and Samuel Helm for a fourth-place finish (1:28.98).

The Bobcats' 200 medley relay team of Helm, sophomore Earl Childs, Fentress and Brewer placed sixth in 1:39.35.

Keller won the boys' team championship with 371.5 points, followed by El Paso Coronado (224), Northwest Eaton (215), Mansfield Lake Ridge (201) and Mansfield High (183.5).

Rounding out the top 10 were: El Paso Franklin (168); Northwest Byron Nelson (142); Central (133); Keller Fossil Ridge (118); and Midland High (109).

Helm added a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke (53.95) and a ninth-place effort in the 50 free (22.48).

Sophomore Tristan Thompson was 13th in the 100 back (57.50).

The Bobcats' 400 free relay team of sophomore Lewis Trevino Tovaas, junior Creed Thompson, sophomore Earl Childs and senior Caleb Peacock placed 11th (3:26.37).

Thompson added an 11th-place effort in the 100 butterfly (54.38).

Junior Whitney Edinburgh was the Lady Cats' top performer.

She teamed up with sophomores Camila Acevedo, Emma Watkins and Paula Brame for a fifth-place showing in the 200 medley relay (1:52.37.

Edinburgh also teamed up with freshman Mallorie Manning, Brame and Watkins for an eighth-place time of 1:42.88 in the 200 free relay.

In her individual events, Edinburgh was seventh in the butterfly (59.07) 10th in the 100 backstroke (1:01.31).

Acevedo was clocked at 1:10.55 for an eighth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.

Manning (1:01.20) and Watkins (1:01.66) were 12th and 13th, respectively, in the 100 butterfly.

The Lady Cats' 400 free relay team of freshman Zoey Moore, Manning, senior Katelyn Mygrants and sophomore Salma Hernandez took seventh with a time of 3:52.62.

Keller also won the girls' team championship with 387 points, followed by Mansfield (357), Mansfield Lake Ridge (270), Northwest Byron Nelson (184), El Paso Franklin (166), Midland (158), El Paso Coronado (140), Keller Central (122), Central (117) and Keller Timber Creek (102).
