San Angelo duplicate bridge results
The cool weather was very nice, but the hot cards at the San Angelo Country Club on Wednesday were even better. At least they were for the two pairs who smartly made the seven spade bids and split the Grand Slam Pot. Those pairs were Barbara Wright/Nancy Harris and Jerre McAfee/Charlotte Sisco. It was a brilliant bid because the hand with 20 points had a singleton Ace of spades which partner opened. I was chicken and only bid six no trump and made seven. Congratulations to the wise winners of a nice prize! The rest of us will keep hoping for another chance and a big pot.
A few weeks ago, I mentioned the hope that party and duplicate players could somehow play together and get to know each other better. Well, there is a chance that can happen. All you have to do is sign up for the event that Suzanne Gates is telling you all about in her contribution to this column. Men and women, Bridge and Mahjong players, and, get this, Hand and Foot players, pay attention and register for this event.
"Pat has provided many tales of the past, so I wanted to add to that collection, as well as advocate for an upcoming good cause.
On Saturday, November 5, 2022, the Daughters of the Nile will host their annual Game Day. For a $35 donation, players will get a continental breakfast, homemade soup and sandwiches for lunch, and four hours of Bridge, Mahjong, or Hand & Foot. Of course, there are prizes. The event takes place at the Suez Shrine Center, 2915 W Loop 306 in San Angelo. Registration is from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, and play begins at 10:00 AM.
So that we have enough food and tables for everyone, we ask that you RSVP to Bert Brewer at 325.949.4754 or Suzanne Gates at 214.244.8506.
Now for the history part. Game Day in San Angelo was started as a fund raiser for the Shriners Children’s Hospitals in 1977. There were four tables of Bridge at that first event. I first attended in 2016 and the attendance had grown to 20+ tables of Bridge, and almost as many Mahjong tables, plus one table of Hand & Foot. COVID interrupted our Game Days in 2020 and 2021, but we are now back!
You are probably asking “Who are Daughters of the Nile and what do they do?” I had heard of Shriners, Masons, and Eastern Star, but not Daughters of the Nile. I learned that Daughters of the Nile is the ladies’ organization that parallels the Shriners men’s group. It began in 1913 for the purpose of character building among women, and for social recreation and advancement. In 1922, we expanded our mission to include fundraising for the Shriners’ hospitals and clinics located throughout North America and Mexico. Our local San Angelo Daughters of the Nile began in 1950 and includes ladies throughout West Texas.
The Shriners began their philanthropic work in 1966. One of the first three hospitals was in Galveston, TX. It now specializes in treatment for children with burns, cleft palate, and spinal/orthopedic issues. There are other hospitals and clinics with additional specialties around the US, Canada, and Mexico. All Shriners’ hospitals and clinics provide treatment for children regardless of their ability to pay. That’s where our local Shriners and Daughters of the Nile organizations come in – our fund raising is key to providing first class treatment, cheerful facilities, and the newest technology. But what really sets Shriners’ facilities apart is the caring and friendly staff. We hear it time and again.
In closing, we hope to see you at Game Day 2022 on November 5th. If you are not able to attend but would like to donate, please send checks to Suzanne Gates 2622 Village Trail San Angelo, TX 76904. The checks should be made payable to: Ziphron No. 100, Daughters of the Nile."
Thank you, Suzanne. Now, that sounds like a fun day. The best part is that we do not have to do any of the work to make this happen. We just need to make a phone call, show up on the 5th, and pay our money, which goes to a great cause. Let's help make it worth all the work the Daughters of the Nile will do to put on this event. Hope to see you there.
