San Angelo schools will be sprucing up the exterior thanks to a grant from Apache Corporation.

Keep San Angelo Beautiful, a 501c3 nonprofit, has been awarded 200 trees from the 2022-2023 Apache Corporation Tree Grant Program, according to a news release from the City of San Angelo.

The nonprofit received 200 trees in five-gallon pots, valued at $7,000, which will be distributed to approximately 40 school locations including Angelo State University, Howard College, 25 SAISD campuses and buildings, Cornerstone Christian School, Trinity Lutheran School, San Angelo Christian Academy, TLCA, Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, the Girl Scout house, Wall ISD, Water Valley, Angelo Catholic School and Grape Creek ISD.

"This will be a total of 450 trees Keep San Angelo Beautiful has planted in our community over the past two years," according to Charlotte Anderson, executive director of the nonprofit.

Keep San Angelo Beautiful has been a recipient in 2020, 2021 and 2022, with the trees valued at more than $10,800.

The Apache Corporation, an oil and gas company, is celebrating donating its 5 millionth tree and this is its 18th year to award trees in 17 states since 2005.

TreeLife Farms is the manager and facilitator of the program for the Apache Corporation.

"The trees we selected are indigenous species for our geographical area and include Live Oak, Red Oak and Cedar Elms," Anderson said. "The trees will provide fresh clean air, thirty-foot canopies and shade, along with new habitats for wildlife and students to explore."

Anderson received the tree at Olives Nursery on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2022 after Mayor Brenda Gunter proclaimed Nov. 4 as Texas Arbor Day at the city council meeting.

"As Texans, we value our trees and the benefits they provide each of us every day," Gunter said. "We encourage people in our community to plant trees and celebrate them on the first Friday of November on Texas Arbor Day."

"Together we can create a brighter and more beautiful future for the next generation."

Since 2005, the Apache Corporation Tree Grant Program has provided some 4.8 million trees to more than 900 nonprofit charitable partners and government agencies in the U.S.
