SAN BENITO — The Friends of the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum has been awarded the San Benito Economic Development Corporation's Community Partnership Grant to benefit the Callandret Black History Museum and Freddy Fender Museum.

Founded in 2007, the Friends of the San Benito Cultural Heritage Museum continues to preserve, promote and showcase the history of San Benito to local residents and tourists.

"The EDC has a vision for the growth of San Benito and the historical society is proud to be a part of it," Sandra Tumberlinson, the historical society's co-founder, stated. "We will work together to promote tourism and these historical markers we are placing in town will do that. In the future, we plan to continue letting the world know about the contributions the people of San Benito have made and how special our town is."

EDC Board President Julian J. Rios described the city's museums as "the only ones of their kind."

"San Benito has a rich history in the Valley, and the San Benito Historical Society has done an outstanding job with preserving that history from the Callandret Museum to the Freddy Fender Museum," Rios stated. "These museums are the only ones of their kind and the EDC funding their grant helps to provide quality of life destinations for not only our citizens but for tourists who choose to enjoy San Benito."
