San Bernardino sheriff's deputies kill L.A. murder suspect in Victorville; they say he pointed gun at them

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s homicide detectives continue to investigate a suspected triple shooting murder in a home in Montclair.

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies shot and killed a murder suspect last week in a home in the Eagle Ranch area of Victorville. They were trying to help Los Angeles police officers arrest him for a killing that city.

The deputies fired at Byron Hayes, 33, only after he pointed a handgun at them, the sheriff's department said in a press release Sunday. Neither the sheriff nor the LAPD made any public announcement of the shooting until three days after it happened.

Deputies and LAPD officers got to the home in the 12600 block of Westway Lane at about 4 p.m. Thursday.

They found Hayes barricaded inside. After over 30 minutes of negotiations, he pointed a handgun at the deputies, who fired an unknown amount of rounds, sheriff’s officials said.

When Hayes retreated inside the home, deputies forced their way in and rendered medical aid. Hayes was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division is investigating the shooting.

The LAPD would not say in which homicide Hayes was a suspect.

The sheriff's department asked anyone with information on the incident to call the Specialized Investigations Division at 909-890-4908. Callers wishing to remain anonymous should call 1-800-78-CRIME (782-7463) or go to wetip.com.
