San Diego County accepting walk-ins for couples wanting to get married on Leap Day

SAN DIEGO — 2024 is a Leap Year. For couples thinking about getting married on the unique date, San Diego County is accepting walk-in couples to get married on Leap Day this year.

February will have 29 days this year, making it a Leap Year. The extra calendar day only happens once every four years.

San Diego Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Jordan Marks announced they are waiving appointment requirements and allowing walk-ins on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, at four offices in Chula Vista, Downtown San Diego, San Marcos and Santee.

However, Marks says spots are filling fast so they recommend couples schedule an appointment online or by calling 619-237-0502. Couples can choose between an indoor or outdoor wedding.

The Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk Offices will be open on Feb. 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for marriage licenses and civil ceremonies. Walk-ins are welcome between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“Leap Day only comes every four years, and my County Clerk office will offer more love by welcoming walk-ins for couples seeking to leap into love and be married on this memorable day.” Marks joked, “If they get married on a Leap Day some hope they only have to remember their anniversary every four years, but being married on such a memorable date will make their wedding all the more special.”

‘A double whammy’: Las Vegas weddings could hit record on New Year’s Eve thanks to date’s pattern

A non-confidential marriage license costs $129. For an additional $107, couples can have their ceremonies performed by County staff in English or Spanish.

Weddings were popular on another unique date just recently — New Year’s Eve was a busy day for the wedding industry with the year ending on 12/31/23, a repeating 1-2-3, 1-2-3 pattern.

Like those with Leap Year birthdays, when will couples getting married celebrate their anniversary?
