San Diego Zoo Welcomes Newborn Endangered Pygmy Hippo

The zoo announced his birth on May 15 in recognition of Endangered Species Day. The calf has not yet been named, but the zoo said mom & baby are healthy. Since its birth, the calf has reportedly been getting ‘lots of attention’ and developing skills integral to a hippo’s survival, like swimming underwater. Pygmy hippos are listed as ‘endangered’ on the Red List of Threatened Species, compiled by the the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
