San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo out vs. Miami Dolphins, Brock Purdy in

The San Francisco 49ers have turned to backup quarterback Brock Purdy early in the first quarter of Sunday's matchup with the Miami Dolphins.

Jimmy Garoppolo was carted to the locker room during the 49ers' opening offensive drive with an apparent ankle injury. The FOX broadcast later announced he is out for the remainder of Sunday's contest.

Purdy led the 49ers to a touchdown on his first full offensive drive, hitting fullback Kyle Jusczyk on a short scoring pass to give San Francisco a 10-7 lead in the first quarter.

Who is Brock Purdy?

An Iowa State graduate, Purdy was "Mr. Irrelevant" in the 2022 NFL Draft. He was selected by San Francisco in the seventh round with the 262nd overall pick.

Purdy has appeared in three games so far this season, including a relief appearance after Garoppolo was injured in the fourth quarter of the 49ers' loss to Kansas City.

He threw for 66 yards and an interception against the Chiefs, becoming the first "Mr. Irrelevant" to throw a pass in an NFL regular season game.

Purdy was a four-year collegiate starter with Cyclones, throwing for 12,170 yards, 81 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. He was twice selected as first-team all-conference.

Purdy will square off with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who hit wide receiver Trent Sherfield on a a crossing route for a 75-yard touchdown on the first play of the game.

Sherfield, a former 49ers receiver, outran the entire 49ers defense for the score.
