San Francisco Centre: Stores closing to begin 2024

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — It’s no secret that San Francisco Centre, formerly known as Westfield, is not what it once was a decade ago when crowds seemingly flooded the mall regularly. SF Centre has had its number of store closures ramp up in recent years.

To begin 2024, that trend has continued with a handful of stores announcing this month they will shut down their respective locations on 865 Market St. Here is a list of those stores closing at the once-flagship mall of the Bay Area.

Adidas

The global sneaker giant closed its lone San Francisco location last week. Adidas’ last day of business was on Jan. 13 as the store held a days-long 50% sale for all items in the store until the closure.

At the indoor entrance on the main level, a sign on the door read “Closed Permanently” (see below). The next closest Adidas store is at the San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore.

Aldo

Aldo, a shoe company founded in Canada with more than 1,500 stores worldwide, will close its SF Centre location on Jan. 21, the retailer confirmed to KRON4.

At this time, Aldo says there are no future plans to open another store in San Francisco or the greater Bay Area. There is still another Aldo store at Stonestown Galleria.

Hollister

Hollister, owned by Abercrombie & Fitch, closed its doors this month. The date that the store closed is not known as Hollister has not responded to KRON4’s inquiries, but the store is confirmed to be closed.

On Thursday, KRON4 visited the location where Hollister resided for years. The store was empty, and the signage was taken down.

J. Crew

J. Crew’s final day of business will be on Jan. 22, according to signs posted across the store. The New York-based clothing store did not respond to KRON4’s inquiry on its decision to leave the mall.

Lucky Brand

Lucky Brand, a California-based denim company, will open its doors for business for the final time on Jan. 29, KRON4 confirmed. Lucky Brand posted a sign at its storefront saying “this isn’t goodbye, it’s see you later,” adding there is a sale for up to 70% off.

The next closest location is at Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo. Lucky Brand has not responded to KRON4’s request for a statement as to why the location decided to leave SF Centre.

Madewell

Madewell is closing its SF Centre location on Jan. 22, the retail company announced on its website. Madewell has a location in the Marina District at 2084 Chestnut St.

Madewell’s hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

Other Stores

Last year, major retailers such as Old Navy and Nordstrom closed their respective downtown San Francisco locations for good. Other companies to close their downtown San Francisco stores include ExpressLEGO, Whole Foods and AT&T.

However, other major retailers have also opened up stores in downtown San Francisco. Furniture retailer IKEA opened a location on Market Street in August. Banana Republic also opened a new flagship store at 152 Geary St.

Despite some retailers opening in the Union Square area, the value of the San Francisco Centre mall has decreased by almost $1 billion in value, KRON4 reported earlier Thursday. The Real Deal reported the mall was valued at $290 million — significantly less than its $1.2 billion estimation in 2016.

San Francisco Centre did not respond to KRON4’s multiple requests for comment on the recent store closures.
