Even a storied brand like Hermès can never afford to rest on its laurels. This year has already seen the opening of new boutiques in locations as diverse as Manhattan’s Meatpacking District and Waikiki, Hawaii, and its latest flagship boutique, in San Francisco, just celebrated its grand opening last week. The brand’s outpost here has been based at 125 Grant Avenue since 2003, but the company worked with Paris-based RDAI architects to expand the space by adding a second floor, making it a whopping 9,000 square feet, the centerpiece of which is an architecturally stunning, curving wooden staircase.

The store is home to some notable offerings, including a custom tailoring section for men as well as a place for repairs to your Hermès merchandise. There are also exclusive items for sale here, such as an Hermès canoe as well as unique versions of the Kelly bag.

For the opening-night celebration, a who’s who of the San Francisco glitterati turned out, including author Danielle Steel, Jony Ive of Apple, and designer Yves Béhar. Needless to say, there were many sightings of exclusive merchandise like the famed Himalaya Birkin bag.

And since everything Hermès touches turns to gold—figuratively speaking, of course—it was only fitting that the celebration included a dance troupe performing their interpretation of the great California Gold Rush. Just as the move to California for the 19th-century settlers wound up being very successful, so goes the hope for Hermès’s new San Francisco boutique.
