San Francisco has most popular indie cafe: study
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – A cup of joe with an ambiance may be easy to find in the Bay Area. In fact, the most popular indie (independent) coffee shop is in San Francisco.
Sightglass Coffee is the top indie coffee shop in the United States, according to a study from Betway. This San Francisco-based coffee has three locations in the Golden City – one in the Mission District, another at Divisadero and Page streets, and its flagship coffee bar in the South of Market District. This coffee shop also has a cafe in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Sycamore District.

The flagship store has a production roastery and an open cafe bar. The Sightglass Coffee website describes the flagship store as an “immersive coffee experience.”
Sightglass Coffee had over 300,000 annual global internet searches and almost 200,000 TikTok views.
Surprisingly, the list did not include any Seattle or Portland, Oregon coffee shops in the top 10. However, New York and San Diego both had two indie coffee shops make the list.
The No. 4 and No. 5 coffee shops are both New York-based –Felix Roasting Co. and Devoción Coffee, which has over 1.4 million views on TikTok. San Diego-based Mostra Coffee said the company was awarded 2020 Roaster of the Year. Communal Coffee is also San Deigo-based with multiple locations and even a coffee subscription.
Methodology
Betway analyzed TikTok views, Instagram hashtags and Google search volume for over 300 independent coffee shops worldwide to find the most popular independent coffee shop in the U.S. and worldwide.
