San Francisco Police Chief Resigns After Officers Fatally Shoot Woman

San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr resigned Thursday after 30 years of service, according to the city’s mayor.

Mayor Ed Lee announced that he asked Suhr to resign, appointing Toney Chaplin as acting police chief, according to NBC Bay Area. The announcement comes after San Francisco police fatally shot a woman earlier in the day.

“These officer-involved shootings, justified or not, have forced our city to open its eyes to questions of when and how police use lethal force,” said Lee during the resignation announcement.

Activists have been calling for Suhr to be fired for months, NBC reports, after fatal shootings in December and April and two recent scandals involving officers exchanging racist text messages.
