San Jose named 4th best for quality of life in US

(KRON) — A Bay Area city is among the top 5 best places to live for quality of life in the United States, according to a new ranking. In a listing of the 25 best places to live in the U.S. for quality of life from U.S. News & World Report, San Jose ranked 4th.

The South Bay city, which the report notes is nicknamed “the capital of Silicon Valley,” received high marks for quality of life, topping Portland, Maine in 5th place, Boston, Massachusetts in 6th and Green Bay, Wisconsin in 7th.

The ranking called San Jose a “diverse area with an innovative spirit.”

“While it was a distinct downtown, San Jose is a sprawling metro area that is as much defined by its suburban neighborhoods and large tech campuses as it is by high-rises in its business district,” the report said. “San Jose’s proximity to other tech headquarters in Silicon Valley, including Google in Mountain View and Apple in Cupertino, cement’s San Jose’s position in the tech hub.”

In addition to its proximity to the tech industry, the ranking cited San Jose’s character and quirky attractions like the Winchester Mystery House, a larger-than-life Monopoly board and 120-acre flea market as among its other amenities.

“Cradled by the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains and Diablo Range, San Jose offers a prime environment for outdoorsy residents, with its proximity to the ocean, the Sierra Nevada and the vineyards — not to mention about 300 sunny days a year,” the report concluded.

In terms of quality of life, San Jose is only outdone by Madison, Wisconsin in 3rd, Boulder, Colorado in 2nd and Ann Arbor, Michigan, which topped the 25-city ranked list.
