San Juan College will be site of county's annual drill on Oct. 7: What to know

Officials from the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management have announced they will be conducting their annual full-scale drill on the San Juan College campus in Farmington early next month.

The event will include an active shooter scenario with simulated gunfire throughout the exercise, according to a news release. The event will take place from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 7 on the college campus, 4601 College Blvd. in Farmington.

The drill will involve local first responders, including law enforcement officials, as well as members of fire departments and emergency medical services. It also will include the participation of several San Juan College employees, the release states.

The college campus will be open during the event, but parking lots A, B, C and F will be off-limits, as will the Educational Services Center, the Health Sciences Center, the Henderson Fine Arts Center, the outside of the Connie Gotsch Theatre and the Department of Public Safety.

Much of the San Juan College campus, including the Educational Services Center, will be off limits on Saturday, Oct. 7 when the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management holds a full-scale drill at the college.

The release states message boards will be positioned throughout the campus to alert passing motorists to the fact that the operations are only a drill.

The OEM conducts a full-scale drill each year, along with holding classroom training, to build the capacity of first responders in the event of an emergency, according to the release. The agency has partnered with oilfield companies for drills in years past.
