San Juan County, Navajo Nation COVID-19 case updates for December 2021
Welcome to the December edition of The Farmington Daily Times' daily COVID-19 news and stats blog. Daily updates are below, short news items are on top.
The New Mexico Department of Health announced on Dec. 29 that it plans to adopt new federal guidance regarding isolation and quarantine for COVID-19.
"The state is currently updating its contact tracing protocols and other key processes and will announce a more specific implementation timeline in the near future," the news release states.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Dec. 27 shortened the recommended time people should isolate after testing positive for COVID-19 from 10 days to five days.
If the person shows no symptoms after the five days, they can resume normal activities but must wear a mask for an additional five days.
The CDC also reduced the time for people to quarantine after exposure to COVID-19 from 10 days to five days. However, further recommendations about the quarantine period varies between unvaccinated people and those who are fully or partly vaccinated or have received booster shots.
"In the coming week, DOH anticipates that CDC will offer additional updated recommendations surrounding K-12 and high-risk congregate settings such as nursing homes, homeless shelters and correctional facilities," the state Department of Health release said.

Updates for Thursday, Dec. 9
5:32 p.m.: The president of the Navajo Nation continued to urge caution and vigilance Thursday. The tribe's health officials are monitoring data and test results as the Omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus continues to pop up in states across the nation.
No instances of the virus have been found on the tribal land.
"Our public health officials continue to test samples to detect whether or not the variant is within the Navajo Nation," President Jonathan Nez said in a news release Thursday. "Although we are hopeful that the Omicron variant will not enter the Navajo Nation, we must anticipate it and prepare. The best way to prepare is to get more of our people fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and to get more booster shots to those who were previously vaccinated."
The news release noted that COVID-19 case numbers in states neighboring the Navajo Nation remained high on Thursday, with Arizona officials reporting 3,663 new cases, Utah 1,397 new cases, and New Mexico 1,626 new cases.
"Scientists are studying this new variant and there is still much to be learned about it," Nez said in the release. "Please continue to take precautions, wear a mask in public, practice social distancing, limit travel, and wash your hands often. We have to remain diligent and keep pushing back on the virus."
The Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with other tribal agencies, reported 78 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and no recent deaths.
