World on alert as new variant spreads
LONDON (AP) — The new potentially more contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus popped up in more European countries on Saturday, just days after being identified in South Africa, leaving governments around the world scrambling to stop the spread.
The U.K. on Saturday tightened its rules on mask-wearing and on testing of international arrivals after finding two cases. New cases were confirmed Saturday in Germany and Italy, with Belgium, Israel and Hong Kong also reporting that the variant has been found in travelers.
In the U.S., Dr. Anthony Fauci, the government’s top infectious diseases expert, said he would not be surprised if the omicron variant was already in the United States, too.
“We have not detected it yet, but when you have a virus that is showing this degree of transmissibility … it almost invariably is ultimately going to go essentially all over,” Fauci said on NBC television.
Because of fears that the new variant has the potential to be more resistant to the protection offered by vaccines, there are growing concerns around the world that the pandemic and associated lockdown restrictions will persist for far longer than hoped.
A number of pharmaceutical firms, including AstraZeneca, Moderna, Novavax and Pfizer, said they have plans in place to adapt their vaccines in light of the emergence of omicron. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech said they expect to be able to tweak their vaccine in around 100 days.
Professor Andrew Pollard, the director of the Oxford Vaccine Group, which developed the AstraZeneca vaccine, expressed cautious optimism that existing vaccines could be effective at preventing serious disease from the omicron variant, noting that most of the mutations appear to be in similar regions as those in other variants.
"At least from a speculative point of view we have some optimism that the vaccine should still work against a new variant for serious disease, but really we need to wait several weeks to have that confirmed," he told BBC radio.
Vaccines now available for children ages 5-11
The next pediatric clinic in San Juan County for administration of COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 5-11 is Nov. 29, with another on Nov. 30. See the schedule below. It will be updated when new clinics are scheduled.
"To register a child and schedule an appointment, parents need to access their own profile at vaccinenm.org and click on 'Dependents,'" the San Juan County Public Health Office said in a press release on Nov. 3. "They can add their children from there. If parents need help registering their children, they can call the Covid Hotline 1-855-600-3453."
Call ahead to reserve your dose
The New Mexico Department of Health continues to hold large-scale vaccination events with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to accommodate those who are eligible for their third dose as well as people seeking first and second doses.
The state health department through the San Juan County Public Health Office will hold the next clinics:
Friday, Dec. 3 (Ages 12+ only), SJC Public Health Office, 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
There may be additional clinics scheduled to meet demand for C0VID-19 boosters. To register for these or other events go to vaccinenm.org. People can pre-register at vaccinenm.org to reserve their dose. There will be on-site registration and walk-ins depending on the available doses.
Northern Navajo Medical Center continues vaccine rollout
Northern Navajo Medical Center is offering flu shots and COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots to eligible adults and children ages 5-11 during vaccination events every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Shiprock High School.
Vaccines are available to those who receive medical services from hospitals or clinics under the Shiprock Service Unit of the Navajo Area Indian Health Service.

The hospital has also partnered with the Central Consolidated School District and the Bureau of Indian Education for vaccination events for children ages 5-11 at schools operated by either entity. Upcoming clinics are:
Wednesday, Dec. 1, Ojo Amarillo Elementary School in Ojo Amarillo from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, Dec. 2, Newcomb Elementary School in Newcomb from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Updates for Tuesday, Nov. 30
6:36 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting 41 new infections and no additional deaths for the Navajo Nation.
Today's update includes 33 cases that were not immediately reported to the three agencies.
The total number of cases is now 39,477 and the death toll remains at 1,542.
"As concerns grow over the spread of the Omicron variant in certain countries around the world, our public health officials continue to urge all of our people to get fully vaccinated, get your booster shot, and take precautions. Due to increases in COVID-19 cases, some health care facilities are experiencing challenges when it comes to providing the nurses that are needed for ICU and specialized care and some patients are being flown to other locations off the Navajo Nation. We cannot afford to have another surge in new cases. Please be very careful and do everything you can to protect yourself and your loved ones," tribal President Jonathan Nez said.
The health agencies have been disclosing case numbers from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS since the pandemic started:

There are 37,465 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 393,744 tests have been conducted.
5:12 p.m.: State health officials reported 1,132 new COVID-19 infections across the state on Tuesday, according to a New Mexico Department of Health news release.
The state also reported 12 new deaths, raising the statewide pandemic death toll to 5,367 and the total COVID-19 caseload to 314,264 cases since the pandemic began.
San Juan County has reported 26,595 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 597 deaths as of Tuesday. The county reported 78 new cases Tuesday.
There were 633 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals on Tuesday due to COVID-19 infections, the news release said.
"As of today, there are 267,030 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the release stated.

6:20 p.m.: Health officials for the Navajo Nation report 27 new COVID-19 cases as the Navajo Department of Health issues a health advisory for 65 communities over high infection rates.
Communities on the list in the Northern Agency and situated in San Juan County are Gadii'ahi, Hogback, Naschitti, Nenahnezad, Newcomb, Sanostee, Sheep Springs, Shiprock and Upper Fruitland.

There are 37,284 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 391,057 tests have been conducted.
5:37 p.m.: There were 45 new COVID-19-related deaths reported late Monday afternoon by the New Mexico Department of Health, and 4,991 new COVID-19 cases as a five-day counting period came to an end on Nov. 29.
The number of cases counted in New Mexico since the pandemic began reached 313,139 with the new numbers. The pandemic's death toll climbed to 5,355.
San Juan County, which has reported 26,517 cases since the start of the pandemic, has also reported 596 deaths as of Monday. The county reported 404 new cases during the period that started Nov. 25 and ended Nov. 29.
There were 572 people under care in New Mexico hospitals Monday due to COVID-19 infections, according to the news release.
"As of today, there are 266,169 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the news release said.

9:33 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 38 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and two recent deaths, according to a news release from the Office of the President and Vice President.
The number of COVID-19-related deaths reached 1,542, the release said.
The release said a full report will be available on Monday.
Updates for Saturday, Nov. 27
4:46 p.m.: The Navajo Nation reported 23 new cases of COVID-19 on Nov. 27 along with one new death, bringing the total to 1,540 deaths.
The Navajo Department of Health, in coordination with the Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center reported the information update in a Navajo Nation Office of the President and Vice President news release.
A full COVID-19 report will be available on Nov. 29.
"Thank you to all of the health care workers and first responders who continue to serve and protect our people during the holiday weekend. We appreciate your hard work and sacrifices. Please do everything you can to help them by taking precautions and reducing the spread of COVID-19. Keep praying and take safety measures," Navajo Nation Vice President Myron Lizer said in the news release.
Updates for Friday, Nov. 26
4:40 p.m.: Today's update by health officials for the Navajo Nation lists 50 new COVID-19 infections and no recent virus-related deaths.
Because today is Navajo Nation Family Day, a tribal holiday, a full report is not available, according to the Office of the President and Vice President.
However, the update states that 1,539 people have died because of complications linked to COVID-19 since the pandemic began.
Officials also remind tribal members and residents that health care facilities continue to administer the COVID-19 vaccine.
"On Navajo Nation Family Day, we give thanks and show our love for our parents, grandparents, children and all of our relatives. We can show our love for one another by taking precautions to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe and healthy during this pandemic. Please be safe, pray for our people including our frontline warriors, and all of our communities across the Navajo Nation" tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the release.
Updates for Thursday, Nov. 25
6:58 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting 77 new cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation.
While a full report is not available because of Thanksgiving, the health agencies state that three more people have died from the disease.
The number of people who have died since the pandemic began is 1,539.
"Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Navajo people! We pray for continued blessings and good health for our people, frontline warriors and our communities. Please be safe and take care of your elders and make sure they have firewood, blankets and everything they need for the cold weather. Have a safe and enjoyable time with your loved ones," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the update, which was released by his office.
Updates for Wednesday, Nov. 24
5:08 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies on Wednesday reported 72 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and nine more deaths.
"The total number of deaths is now 1,536," the Office of the President and Vice President said in a news release Wednesday. "The report indicates that 36,896 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 388,422 COVID-19 tests have been administered."
The total number of COVID-19 cases reached 39,158 on Wednesday, including six delayed reported cases.

In San Juan County, where 82 new cases were reported Wednesday, there have been 26,113 cases reported since the pandemic began and 594 deaths as of Wednesday.
There were 648 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals Wednesday due to COVID-19 infections.

6:40 p.m.: Today's report by health officials for the Navajo Nation shows 59 new cases of COVID-19.
There were also 75 cases that were not immediately reported to officials. The latest figures raise the total number of cases to 39,080.
The report had no additional deaths related to the disease. This keeps the death toll at 1,527.
"If you are celebrating Thanksgiving Day with friends or family, please be very cautious and limit in-person attendance. In the past, we've experienced increases in new cases following major holidays because people let their guard down among family and friends," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said in the update.
"We do not want any more of our people to be infected with COVID-19 or to lose their lives. If you are near others that do not reside in the same household, please wear a mask and practice social distancing. We have to take all precautions to keep ourselves and others safe and healthy this holiday season," he said.

5:16 p.m.: Hospitals across New Mexico remained busy Tuesday as COVID-19-patient numbers remained high across New Mexico. State health officials on Tuesday reported 1,189 new COVID-19 cases and 12 more deaths.
New Mexico has seen 306,743 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began, and 5,289 COVID-19-related deaths, according to a New Mexico Department of Health news release.
The statewide test positivity rate, which was around 12.9% last week, was at 12.1% Tuesday.
San Juan County reported 80 new cases Tuesday for a total of 26,031 cases since the pandemic began and 591 deaths as of Tuesday.
There were 639 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals Tuesday due to COVID-19 infections, an increase of 80 patients compared to Monday's total of 559 patients.
"As of today, there are 260,582 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the news release stated.

6:48 p.m.: Ten communities from the Northern Agency in San Juan County are under advisory because of uncontrolled transmission of COVID-19.
The Navajo Department of Health placed Gadii'ahi, Hogback, Naschitti, Nenahnezad, Newcomb, Sanostee, Sheep Springs, Shiprock, Two Grey Hills and Upper Fruitland under advisory.
A total of 67 communities were identified today by the department, which based the placement on the number of cases from Nov. 5 to Nov. 18.
Other New Mexico communities on the list are Baca-Prewitt, Becenti, Casamero Lake, Chichiltah, Church Rock, Counselor, Coyote Canyon, Crownpoint, Iyanbito, Littlewater, Mexican Springs, Nageezi, Nahodishgish, Pinedale, Rock Springs, Thoreau, Tóhajiilee, Tohatchi, Torreon, Tsayatoh, Twin Lakes, Whitehorse Lake and White Rock.

"COVID-19 vaccines for individuals five years and older are widely available at health care facilities across the Navajo Nation. We all have to do our part to push back on COVID-19," Nez said.
The department, along with the Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center, reported 46 new COVID-19 cases and no additional deaths related to the disease.

4:28 p.m.: There were 3,658 new COVID-19 cases recorded in New Mexico over a three-day counting period ending on Nov. 22, state health officials reported on Monday.
Officials also reported 14 more COVID-19-related deaths across the state.
Case totals statewide since the pandemic began reached 305,579 on Monday, the state's news release said. There have been 5,277 deaths related to the pandemic in New Mexico.

The total number of deaths is 1,527, according to a news release Sunday from the Office of the President and Vice President.
"The report indicates that 36,607 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 382,386 COVID-19 tests have been administered," the news release said. "The overall total number of positive COVID-19 cases is now 38,898, including 11 delayed reported cases."

The new infections bring the total number of cases to 38,852. This includes 23 cases that were not immediately reported to health agencies.
Since the pandemic began last year, the total number of reported deaths linked to the disease has been 1,522.

In addition to the latest numbers, the news release states that President Jonathan Nez and first lady Phefelia Nez received booster doses of the COVID-19 vaccine while their son, Alexander Nez, 6, got his first vaccine dose during a vaccination event today in Piñon, Arizona.
The president was at the event to show support to health care workers and families who were in attendance.
"Thank you to all of the health care workers and many others who are working through the weekend to administer vaccines and booster shots. We encourage families to get their vaccination before the holidays," Nez said in the release.

6:58 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting today 96 new cases of COVID-19 for the Navajo Nation.
On Nov. 18, they reported 99 new cases and three more virus-related deaths.
Today's report had no additional deaths. There have been 1,518 people who have died since the pandemic began.
"The Navajo Department of Health issued a health advisory notice on Friday, expanding the COVID-19 booster dose eligibility on the Navajo Nation to address the widespread and continuing surge of COVID-19 infections. The advisory recommends Navajo citizens and residents who are 18 years old and older to get a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose," the news release states.
In the advisory, the department recommends the Indian Health Service and tribal health providers who serve tribal members follow the expanded eligibility.

Nearly 600 people were hospitalized Thursday in New Mexico health facilities as state health officials reported 1,790 new COVID-19 cases and 23 more deaths due to the virus.
The new case numbers drove the state’s total case count since the pandemic began to 300,101 cases. The pandemic has claimed 5,238 New Mexicans as of Thursday, according to the state's daily news release.
There were 254 new cases reported in San Juan County Thursday. The county has reported 25,386 cases since the pandemic started and 585 deaths as of Thursday.
There were 599 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals Thursday due to COVID-19 infections. On Wednesday that number was 539.
"As of today, there are 256,190 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the release said.

5:50 p.m.: Today, the Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Epidemiology Center and Navajo Area Indian Health Service report 96 new COVID-19 infections for the Navajo Nation.
There were also 42 cases that were not reported to health officials until now. The total number of cases is 38,490.
One more person has died from complications related to the virus. There have been 1,515 people who have died since the pandemic began last year.

4:40 p.m.: State health officials reported 1,530 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday and 12 more deaths, according to a news release from the New Mexico Department of Health.
The statewide case total since the pandemic began reached 298,313 on Wednesday. There have been 5,215 COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexico residents, the news release said.
The 7-Day test positivity rate Wednesday was 12.3%. On Monday that rate was 12.9%.
San Juan County, which has recorded 25,131 cases since the pandemic started, reported 112 new cases Wednesday. The county has recorded 581 COVID-19-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

5:55 p.m.: The Navajo Nation experience one of its lowest number of new cases in recent days with health agencies reporting 17 new infections.
Since the pandemic began last year, there have been 38,352 cases. The tally includes 89 cases that were not immediately reported to health agencies.
There were no recent deaths in today's update. There have been 1,514 people who have died of COVID-19.
"We need more of our Navajo Nation residents to get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before the holiday season. 70% of eligible residents 12 years and older are fully vaccinated on the Navajo Nation. For the Navajo Nation executive branch, 97% of employees have received the vaccine. We're doing much better than the rest of the country and states, but we need to do better. If you haven't already received the COVID-19 vaccine, we strongly urge you to do so to help protect yourself, your loved ones and others," Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said.

5:25 p.m.: State health officials announced 12 more COVID-19-related deaths in New Mexico on Tuesday, half of them unidentified residents of San Juan County.
The New Mexico Department of Health on Tuesday also announced 1,048 additional COVID-19 cases statewide and a 7-day test positivity rate of 12.4%, down a bit from yesterday's rate of 12.9%.
San Juan County, which reported 86 new cases on Tuesday, has documented 25,019 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 578 deaths.

10:20 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center have reported 62 new COVID-19 cases for the Navajo Nation today.
The update states there were also five cases that were not immediately known to the entities.
On Sunday, the entities reported 89 new cases. Due to technical issues on both days, a full report was not available.
There were no additional deaths related to the virus on both days. The death toll remains at 1,514.
A new health advisory by the Department of Health shows that 55 communities have uncontrolled spread of the virus, based on cases from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11.

5:47 p.m.: A three-day counting period revealed 3,712 new COVID-19 cases across New Mexico and 22 more deaths, the state Department of Health reported on Monday.
The state has recorded 295,767 COVID-19 cases in New Mexico since the pandemic began and 5,191 pandemic-related deaths among state residents, according to Monday's news release.
New Mexico's 7-Day test positivity rate across the state reached 12.9% Monday, the news release noted in its headline.
In averages measured between Oct. 26 to Nov. 8, San Juan County's positivity rate during that time period was 19.93%, according to the Department of Health website.
"The percent positive is exactly what it sounds like: the percentage of all coronavirus tests performed that are actually positive, or: (positive tests)/(total tests) x 100%," the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health website explained.

The Navajo Nation has reported 65 more cases of COVID-19 and six additional deaths, The Associated Press reported.
The latest figures released Saturday put the tribe's overall number of cases at 38,479 since the pandemic began more than a year ago. The known death toll now is 1,513.
Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez urged residents of the vast reservation to be careful when traveling to neighboring cities and states where safety measures aren't always as strict.
The tribe has maintained a mask mandate through most of the pandemic.
Nez also has urged residents to take advantage of weekend vaccination drives including ones Pinehill and Shiprock in the New Mexico portion of the reservation and in Chinle, Arizona.
Case numbers from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS were not available in Saturday's news release.
Updates for Friday, Nov. 12
6:30 p.m.: Today's report by health officials for the Navajo Nation lists 77 new COVID-19 cases and 13 cases where reporting to officials was delayed.
There were no recent deaths in the update. This keeps the death toll at 1,507.

4:30 p.m.: State health officials on Friday reported 21 more COVID-19-related deaths and 3,524 more COVID-19 cases over a two-day reporting period that included the Veterans Day holiday.
That number of new cases represents an average of 1,762 cases per day across the state on Nov. 11 and Nov. 12.
The state now has recorded a total of 292,078 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 5,169 COVID-19-related deaths, according to a news release by the New Mexico Department of Health.
San Juan County added 556 new cases during the two-day reporting period, an average of 278 per day. The county has reported 24,357 cases since the pandemic began. There have been 570 COVID-19-related deaths in San Juan County since the start of the pandemic as of Friday.
There were 508 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals Friday due to COVID-19 infections. The number represents a steady increase of COVID-19 patients under medical treatment. There were 490 reported hospitalizations on Wednesday, and 425 on Monday.
"As of today, there are 252,155 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the news release said.

5:56 p.m.: The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center are reporting on Thursday 103 new COVID-19 infections for the Navajo Nation.
"We've gone through so many challenges since the start of this pandemic. Through the strength and teachings of our ancestors and elders, we remain strong and we continue to persevere," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.
He added, "we have to continue to pray and to show our support for one another. Our health care workers have given us the guidance and direction to keep ourselves and others safe and it's our responsibility to practice those measures daily. Please minimize in-person gatherings, wear masks in public, get fully vaccinated, and if you are fully vaccinated, please get a booster shot before the holidays. As of Wednesday, New Mexico has reported 288,557 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 5,148 COVID-19-related deaths, according to a state health department news release.
Hospitalization numbers rose by 20 on Wednesday as the state reported there were 490 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections. On Tuesday there were 470 hospitalized and on Monday there were 425.

"We need more of our Navajo Nation residents to get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before the holiday season," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the update.
He added that 70% of eligible residents who are 12 years and older are fully vaccinated.
"For the Navajo Nation executive branch, 97% of employees have received the vaccine. We're doing much better than the rest of the country and states, but we need to do better," Nez said.

4:27 p.m.: A three-day reporting period yielded 3,370 new COVID-19 cases across New Mexico, state health officials announced on Monday in a news release.
The state also reported 11 more deaths, nine of those recent deaths, during the counting period that started on Nov. 6 and ended Nov. 8.
Three of those deaths were among San Juan County residents, bringing the pandemic's toll in this county to 565 as of Monday. The county has seen 23,501 cases since the pandemic began and reported 520 new cases during the three-day counting period.

The Navajo Department of Health and other agencies reported 85 new COVID-19 cases on the Navajo Nation and four new deaths, according to a release from the Office of the President and Vice President.
"The total number of deaths is now 1,498," the release said. "The report indicates that 35,104 individuals have recovered from COVID-19. 368,816 COVID-19 tests have been administered."
The number of positive COVID-19 cases rose to 37,34 Saturday, including eight cases that were delayed in reporting, the release said.
"Please wear a mask in public, get vaccinated, and be very careful in your daily activities," said Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez. "The safest place to be is at home here on the Navajo Nation. We are in this together."

4:18 p.m.: There were 1,463 new COVID-19 cases reported by New Mexico health officials on Friday, and 12 more deaths related to the pandemic.
The number of COVID-19-related deaths among New Mexicans reached 5,113 on Friday. The state’s total caseload since the pandemic started grew to 282,742 on Friday, according to a news release by the New Mexico Department of Health.
There were 216 new cases reported Friday in San Juan County, which has seen 22,983 cases since the first case was recorded in the county on March 21, 2020. As of Friday the county had recorded 562 COVID-19-related deaths.
There were 435 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Friday, the release stated.
"As of today, there are 247,128 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the release said.

7:15 p.m.: The Navajo Nation saw 103 new COVID-19 cases and five recent deaths related to the virus, health officials reported today.
Included in the update were eight cases where delayed reporting occurred. Today's numbers raise the tally of cases to 37,154.
There was one death that was not reported until today, bringing the death toll to 1,493.
The Navajo Department of Health, Navajo Area Indian Health Service and Navajo Epidemiology Center have been disclosing case numbers since the pandemic began from the eight service units under the Navajo Area IHS:

4:45 p.m.: New Mexico Department of Health figures released on Thursday show 1,611 new COVID-19 cases were reported across the state, 287 of them in San Juan County.
The state's total number of reported cases since the start of the pandemic rose to 281,282 on Thursday, according to a state health department news release. Statewide there have been 5,101 deaths due to COVID-19.
There were 445 more cases reported on Thursday than were reported on Wednesday, when the state logged 1,166 cases.
San Juan County's total case count since the pandemic began rose to 22,768 on Thursday.
Including the death reported Thursday of an unidentified woman in her 80s, San Juan County has recorded 561 COVID-19-related deaths since the pandemic began.
There were 460 people being treated in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Thursday, an increase of 41 patients statewide since Wednesday's report.
"As of today, there are 246,324 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the news release said.

5:39 p.m.: Case numbers across the state remained high as New Mexico health officials reported 1,166 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday.
The state's Wednesday news release also reported 12 more deaths, none in San Juan County.
New Mexico has seen 279,670 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic and 5,085 New Mexicans have died during the pandemic, the release stated.
San Juan County accounted for 176 of the new cases, bringing the total number of reported cases in the county to 22,482. The county has reported 560 deaths since the pandemic began.
Hospital declares a crisis, seeks aid
There were 419 people hospitalized in New Mexico on Wednesday due to COVID-19 infections, with San Juan Regional Medical center reporting 88 patients hospitalized due to COVID-19.
"This represents more than half of all the admitted patients receiving care in the hospital," hospital spokesperson Laura Werbner said in a release announcing that the hospital has declared crisis standards of care allowing it to get emergency assistance and resources to continue to treat patients.
"The current case rate in our community is 96 per 100,000, the highest in the state of New Mexico," Werbner said in the release. "This has caused an extremely high demand for patient care and indicates that the hospital will continue to be busy, or busier, with additional COVID-19 admissions in the coming weeks."
Cases concentrated in some San Juan County ZIP Codes "are driving the rate of spread – the highest in the state – due to their significantly low vaccine rates," the hospital's release said. "These include: 87401, 87402, (Farmington), 87410 (Aztec) and 87413 (Bloomfield). This directly converts to a high COVID census in the hospital."

San Juan County, which has reported 22,306 cases since the pandemic started, logged 76 new cases on Tuesday. The county has reported 560 pandemic-related deaths as of Tuesday.
Eight of the 12 deaths reported Tuesday were recent:
A man in his 40s from Bernalillo County who had been hospitalized.
A man in his 60s from Bernalillo County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A man in his 60s from Chaves County who had been hospitalized.
A woman in her 80s from Curry County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A man in his 60s from Grant County.
A man in his 60s from McKinley County who had underlying conditions.
A woman in her 60s from Sandoval County who had underlying conditions.
A man in his 70s from San Juan County who had underlying conditions.
Four of the deaths happened more than 30 days ago:
A man in his 40s from McKinley County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A woman in her 40s from McKinley County who was hospitalized and had underlying conditions.
A man in his 50s from McKinley County who has been hospitalized.
A woman in her 40s from San Juan County.
There were 382 people under treatment in New Mexico hospitals due to COVID-19 infections on Tuesday.
"As of today, there are 245,516 COVID-19 cases designated as having recovered by the New Mexico Department of Health," the release stated.
The state reported at least one positive COVID-19 case among residents and/or staff in the past 28 days at the following long-term care facilities:

Updates for Monday, Nov. 1
6:36 p.m.: Today's update by health officials on the Navajo Nation lists 34 new COVID-19 infections and no recent deaths related to the virus.
Since the pandemic began last year, there have been 36,867 cases. This number includes delayed reporting for 16 cases. The death toll remains at 1,487.
The number of communities under a health advisory because of high transmission increased to 58 this week. The Navajo Department of Health issued the advisory today, based on cases from Oct. 15 to Oct. 28.
Communities in New Mexico under advisory are Baca-Prewitt, Breadsprings, Burnham, Chichiltah, Church Rock, Coyote Canyon, Crownpoint, Iyanbito, Lake Valley, Lupton, Mariano Lake, Nageezi, Naschitti, Nenahnezad, Newcomb, Ramah, Rock Springs, Sanostee, Sheep Springs, Shiprock, Standing Rock, Thoreau, Tohatchi, Tsayatoh, Two Grey Hills and Upper Fruitland.
Those in Arizona and Utah include Aneth, Birdsprings, Chinle, Coppermine, Dilkon, Ganado, Greasewood, Houck, Indian Wells, Inscription House, Kaibeto, Kayenta, Leupp, Low Mountain, Lukachukai, Lupton, Many Farms, Nahata Dziil, Nahodishgish, Piñon, Red Valley, Rock Point, Rough Rock, St. Michaels, Sweetwater, Tachee-Blue Gap, Teec Nos Pos, Teesto, Tonalea, Tsaile-Wheatfields, Tselani-Cottonwood and Tuba City.

There are 34,665 individuals who are considered recovered from the virus. A total of 363,605 tests have been conducted.
"The direction that this virus takes, whether new infections increase or decrease, is entirely in our hands individually and collectively. We know how to reduce and even stop the spread of COVID-19, but it takes all of us making the right choices for ourselves and others each and every day. This week, the COVID-19 uncontrolled spread among Navajo communities continues to gradually increase, and we must take more precautionary steps as we move towards holiday months," tribal President Jonathan Nez said in the news release.
5:52 p.m.: The three-day reporting period ending Nov. 1 yielded 2,630 new COVID-19 cases across New Mexico and 12 more deaths, state health officials reported on Monday in a news release. That's an average of more than 876 cases per day.
The state has recorded 277,835 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began and 5,061 pandemic-related deaths.
San Juan County reported 404 new cases over the three-day period from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1.
Two of the recent deaths reported Monday were unidentified San Juan County residents, bringing the county's pandemic-related deaths to 558 as of Monday.
The state also reported that an unidentified McKinley County resident who had been a resident of a care home in Farmington was among the deaths reported Monday.
Of the 12 deaths reported Monday, eight were recent:
A man in his 90s from Bernalillo County who had underlying conditions and was a resident of the Bellamah House in Albuquerque.
A man in his 40s from Doña Ana County who had been hospitalized.
