San Mateo County Reports 86 New Coronavirus Cases, No Deaths

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA — San Mateo County Health reported 86 additional coronavirus cases Wednesday.

The latest report brings the countywide COVID-19 case count to 4,254.

The county reported no additional coronavirus-related fatalities Wednesday, leaving its death toll at 114.

There were 62 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in San Mateo County as of Wednesday, of which 11 were being treated in intensive care units.

Elsewhere around the Bay Area and beyond, the 40th anniversary Santa Clara Art & Wine Festival is canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, city officials announced Tuesday. The festival was originally scheduled for Sept. 19-20 and was set to include more than 175 artists, local breweries, wineries, food stands and live entertainment.

The Oakland Zoo can reopen and outdoor dining can resume in Alameda County following the state's approval of a variance from certain activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic, county public health officials announced Wednesday.

Alameda County supervisors Tuesday bid farewell to the county's former health officer, who was sworn in as the state's epidemiologist and deputy director of the California Department of Public Health Center for Infectious Diseases. Dr. Erica Pan was Alameda County's health officer for a year, including the period since the start of the novel coronavirus pandemic, and overall had served the county for 8-1/2 years in more than one role.

To increase enforcement of Contra Costa County's COVID-19 health orders, county leaders asked Tuesday for an ordinance to allow county workers to issue infraction tickets to businesses, houses of worship and other groups that are seen violating the rules. County supervisors also asked for a dedicated telephone hotline for reporting violations of the health order, in part to motivate more compliance with the rules.

There were 349,180 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 7,286 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Wednesday afternoon according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The United States had 3,478,017 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 137,106 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Wednesday afternoon.

There have been 13,439,126 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 581,103 deaths reported globally as of Wednesday afternoon.
