Sand Mountain Amphitheater hosts norteño legend Ramón Ayala on Sept. 9

Grammy Award-winning norteño artist Ramón Ayala will be in concert Sept. 9 at the Sand Mountain Park and Amphitheater, the facility announced in a news release this week.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday.

A native of Monterrey, Mexico, Ayala is a master accordion player, vocalist and songwriter. His career spans 40 years with groups such as Los Jilgueros de Marin, Los Pavoreales and Relampagos del Norte, aside from his solo career.

He won the 2001 Grammy for Best Mexican/Mexican American Album for “En Vivo… El Hombre Y Su Música, the 2010 Grammy for Best Norteño Album for “Classic” and has seven other nominations on his résumé.

Ayala claimed Latin Grammys for Best Norteño Album in 2001 for “Quémame Los Ojos/Amigos Del Alma” and in 2002 for “El Número Cien.”

Norteño is a genre based on polkas and other central European rhythms, with the accordion in the forefront, brought to northern Mexico by immigrants from Germany, Poland and what is now the Czech Republic.
