Sanders projected to win his home state of Vermont immediately after polls close
Super Tuesday results are getting started with one win that hardly comes as a surprise.
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) will win the Democratic primary in his home state of Vermont, CNN, CBS, and NBC projected immediately after polls closed at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on Super Tuesday. At the same time, a victory for former Vice President Joe Biden was also projected in Virginia, where 99 delegates are at stake.
This Vermont victory was considered a slam dunk for Sanders, with FiveThirtyEight noting Vermont was the Super Tuesday state where the senator had the safest lead, while his lead was "most tenuous" in Massachusetts. On the other hand, Sanders suffered an early disappointment with his loss to Biden in Virginia.
Sanders and his wife voted in Burlington, Vermont on Tuesday morning, with the senator joking, "I want to make sure we get at least two votes in Vermont!" Sixteen pledged delegates are at stake in Vermont on Super Tuesday, when 13 other states are also voting.
In 2016, Sanders also easily won Vermont's Democratic primary, taking 85 percent of the vote.
