Sandia radiation expert to lead national group

Mar. 2—ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sandia National Laboratories' Charles Potter, a certified health physicist, recently was elected president of the American Academy of Health Physics, the professional support group for certified health physicists and the certification process.

Potter, previously the organization's parliamentarian for three years, is an internationally recognized expert on the measurement and impact of radiation on humans, according to a news release.

He's now vice chairman of a committee that develops standards for radiation protection and participates in working groups focused on measuring external radiation exposure through inhalation or ingestion, and monitoring dose exposure for large groups after an adverse event.

Potter has been the lead author on 17 scientific articles on radiation dosimetry, biological research and national security. He is also a fellow of the Health Physics Society.

In addition to being an adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico's Department of Nuclear Engineering, he holds a Bachelor of Science in physics from the former Trenton State College in New Jersey. He received a master's and doctorate in radiation health from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, according to the release.

Potter will serve as president-elect until he begins his term Jan. 1, 2022.
