“We are all incredibly grateful for the solid foundation and culture of success that Coach MacLean and his staff built over the past five seasons, but now look forward to turning the program over to Coach Lomp,” said Sandwich administrator for athletics Neil Murphy in a press release.. “His extensive knowledge, passion for education and football, and tireless work ethic will greatly benefit every football-playing student-athlete in our building.”

MacLean coached the Blue Knights for five seasons and led the program to a 17-9 mark over the previous three seasons. Sandwich made two playoff appearances during his tenure and won one Cape & Islands League title. He went 24-24 during his five-year tenure.

“As the team went by we had those small successes,” said MacLean to the Cape Cod Times last month. “Success breeds success and I think kids get more excited about. It was great to see the crowd going more in the stands, just people getting excited about Sandwich football. Hopefully that continues even though I’ll be stepping back.”

Sandwich won't be the only Cape Cod school with a new football coach next fall. Joe Morency resigned at Falmouth following an 8-2 campaign in 2022. The Clippers defeated Sandwich, 16-12, in the regular-season finale to win the Cape & Islands League title and also clinch a postseason berth.

Sandwich, Falmouth and Mashpee were the only Cape schools to reach the playoffs in 2022.
