Sandy City unfurls first-in-history city flag next to I-15

SANDY, Utah (ABC4) — Sandy City’s new first-in-history flag is officially flying high next to I-15. City officials and Colonial Flag unfurled the first-ever flag on Friday morning.

The new flag was made under the direction of Mayor Monica Zoltanski, who asked the community for input in designing a “true flag design” for the city. Previously, the city simply placed the city’s logo on a flag.

“We’ve never had a city flag. We’ve had a corporate logo but we’ve never had a Sandy City flag,” said Zoltanski. “So when I came into the office and discovered that I thought ‘I’m going to put out to our residents to see if they agree with me that it’s time we have a city flag.'”

The final design for the new flag follows the city’s blue and green color scheme, featuring two “Utah-shaped” mountains and a thick white line to represent the snow-capped mountains. A five-point star in the upper right corner of the flag links the city to both the Utah and U.S. flags, according to officials.

The goal was to follow flag design principles of using no more than two or three basic colors and keeping the design simple enough that a child could draw it from memory. The North American Vexillological Association, an organization of flag scholars and enthusiasts, said the best flags also avoid using lettering or seals.

Following a public voting process, the flag committee selected a design by Marcus Xavier featuring a blue sky background and mountain peaks with a star directly in the middle to pull inspiration from.

In May, the public made it overwhelmingly clear they favored the adopted design, winning 61.8% of the preference vote compared to two other finalists.

Zoltanski said the community’s input has made the flag “so much more than just a flag.” She called the new design a symbol of Sandy City’s identity and a symbol to rally around. The new city flag is already being flown at Sandy Hall and several businesses across the city.

“It’s a part of us now and people will come to know it, recognize it, and love it,” Zoltanski said.
