SANDYVILLE — Kortnie Mayle and Katrina Hall didn't ask for the debilitating health problems that are now sapping their strength and their finances.

Mayle, 20, is battling three diseases of the blood. She has large granular lymphocyte leukemia, a rare cancer of white blood cells; thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder characterized by the formation of an abnormal form of hemoglobin; and autoimmune neutropenia, which results in the destruction of white blood cells.

Hall, 45, has end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and asthma. Her lung function is 23.9%. She has been dependent on oxygen since she was 39. In 2018, she had surgery for colon cancer.

The information about their struggles comes from Deb Canfield, who belongs to the Sandy Valley Fraternal Order of Eagles, which is planning benefits for Hall and Mayle, who are also members of the organization.

The benefit for Hall, who lives near Navarre, will run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Eagles' location, 4296 Cross Roads Road NE. The $10 dinner will include Johnny Marzetti, salad, roll and dessert.

R & J Sounds DJ will play music from the 1950s and 1960s. There will be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle.

Friends and family are asking for basket donations, money or anything that could be auctioned to help with medical bills and equipment for Hall. Persons interested in making donations may call 843-263-0057 ot 330-205-4907.

The benefit for Mayle, a Sandy Valley High School graduate who lives in the Magnolia area, will be at the same place from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. March 19. The pasta dinner will cost $8 for adults and $5 for children ages 5 through 10.

R & J Sounds DJ will play music. There will be a cash bar, 50/50 drawing and basket raffles.

Organizers are seeking basket donations. They want to borrow a roulette wheel and gaming tables. Experienced casino game dealers are also sought. To offer help, call 330-224-9235. Money can be donated through Cash App $Pray4Kort.
