SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — Santa Clara County Jail inmates last week ended a nine-day hunger strike in protest in protest living conditions amid the coronavirus crisis, The San Francisco Chronicle reports.

A strike that started Jan. 13 with 30 inmates swelled to 53, 49 of which were from cell block 7B according to the report.

All of the inmates involved in the strike lost between 10 to 20 pounds by the time the strike ended Friday, the report said.

The strike followed an outbreak last month in which 30 inmates and 30 jail staffers tested positive for the virus according to the report.

Inmates alleged that the facility’s staff was not adhering to coronavirus protocols. Their demands included requiring officers to wear masks and gloves.
