Santa Clara County Reports 122 New Coronavirus Cases, 3 Deaths

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported 122 additional coronavirus cases Thursday.

The latest announcement brings the countywide COVID-19 case count to 9,731.

The county reported three additional coronavirus-related fatalities Thursday, bringing its COVID-19 death toll to 190.

There were 177 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Santa Clara County as of Thursday, of which 52 were being treated in intensive care units.

Santa Clara County announced on Wednesday that it will set up Census 2020 kiosks at pop-up COVID-19 testing sites to mitigate the effects of President Donald Trump's claim that he will exclude undocumented immigrants from the counts used in Congressional redistricting. The kiosks are part of a larger effort to ensure that all county residents are counted and will provide tablets for people waiting to get tested to fill out the census on the spot.

Elsewhere around the Bay Area and beyond, an employee with the San Francisco Sheriff's Office has tested positive for COVID-19 -- the 10th employee to test positive -- Sheriff Paul Miyamoto announced Thursday. The staff member worked at the Hall of Justice, located at 850 Bryant St., Miyamoto confirmed.

As hospitalizations of COVID-19-positive patients in San Francisco reach an all-time high, city officials on Thursday announced the city will open a new low acuity medical facility in the Presidio in order to free up hospital beds and make room for coronavirus patients. The new site, located at 1163 and 1167 Gorgas Ave., will not treat COVID-19 patients but instead will provide medical care for people who need hospitalized care or who have recently been discharged from the hospital but still need short-term care.

There were 486,365 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 8,953 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Thursday afternoon according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The United States had 4,476,355 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 151,674 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Thursday afternoon.

There have been 17,132,653 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 669,256 deaths reported globally as of Thursday afternoon.
