Santa Clara County Reports 189 New Coronavirus Cases, 1 Death
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA — The Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported 189 additional coronavirus cases Friday.
The latest announcement brings the countywide COVID-19 case count to 9,913.
The county reported one additional coronavirus-related fatality Friday, bringing its COVID-19 death toll to 191.
There were 178 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Santa Clara County as of Friday, of which 45 were being treated in intensive care units.
Elsewhere in the Bay Area and beyond, a Petaluma firefighter who tested positive last week for the COVID-19 coronavirus is expected to rejoin the Petaluma Fire Department next week, fire officials said Thursday.
The firefighter, who the department did not identify, tested positive for the coronavirus July 23 after developing mild symptoms on July 19 during a 48-hour shift. He immediately quarantined himself, according to the fire department.
In addition, 14 crew members were quarantined after having immediate, prolonged contact with the affected firefighter before he tested positive. The crew members received COVID-19 tests Tuesday and all 14 tested negative.
A Larkspur man told Marin County park rangers this week that he was assaulted for telling a jogger on the Gertrude Ord Trail to put on a face covering to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The 59-year-old Larkspur man was walking on the trail with his wife in the area of Phoenix Lake in Ross around 10 a.m. Wednesday when they encountered the jogger coming toward them from the opposite direction.
The man told the jogger to put on a coronavirus mask before getting closer. The jogger subsequently shoved the man to the ground and continued running, according to Marin Municipal Water District spokeswoman Jeanne Mariani-Belding.
Passenger traffic in June at Oakland International Airport was up more than 100 percent compared with May, but demand for air travel nationwide is again showing signs of weakening, airport officials said Friday.
The number flyers jumped 141 percent in June to about 255,000, compared with about 106,000 in May. While the increase was a good sign, the June total was still only 21 percent of a year ago, according to airport officials.

There were 493,396 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 9,034 coronavirus-related deaths in California as of Friday afternoon according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
The United States had 4,542,620 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 152,940 coronavirus-related fatalities as of Friday afternoon.
There have been 17,132,653 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 675,584 deaths reported globally as of Friday afternoon.
