Santa Monica Hosts Live Veterans Day Celebration

SANTA MONICA, CA — The city of Santa Monica will join the Los Angeles Army Recruitment Battalion for a live-streamed Veterans Day commemoration Wednesday at 11 a.m.

The Santa Monica community can watch the ceremony on Facebook at www.facebook.com/cityofsantamonica/live.

"To protect community health in light of COVID-19 and essential physical distancing measures, public attendance is not permitted," city officials said in a news release.

The short program will include:

  • Posting of the colors

  • National anthem

  • Remarks from Santa Monica Councilmember Gleam Davis

  • Remarks from Lieutenant Colonel Garret Kaye, U.S. Army

Nov. 11 is the day the U.S. signed the armistice that ended World War I. More than 100,000 Americans made the ultimate sacrifice and died in the service of their country. Since then, the U.S. has fought in six major wars.

"Each time, calling on the men and women in our military to brave the battleground and fight for our country," the city said.

For 21 years, the five pillars of the Veterans Memorial in Palisades Park honor each branch of the military, the Army, the Navy, the Marines, the Airforce and the Coast Guards.

"The Santa Monica Veterans Memorial symbolizes peace and healing," officials said.
