Santa Monica Schools: Virtual Town Halls Will Discuss Reopening

SANTA MONICA, CA — Parents, guardians, teachers and staff are invited to learn about reopening plans for the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District during two upcoming virtual town hall meetings.

Students have been learning online for months, but school officials are hoping to answer questions about what will happen when students return to the class—and what the class will look like amid the pandemic.

These are the two upcoming meetings to discuss reopening plans:

  • Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. for a secondary school focus

  • Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. for an elementary school focus

There will be a presentation on reopening with the school board, including all the required safety measures the district is taking in preparation for in-person learning. The district will finalize the decision regarding reopening models at a special board meeting scheduled for Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. via Zoom.

People can submit questions to panelists via the Q&A feature, which panelists will either answer live or add the question and response to the website, which the district is developing.

"Given the time constraints and length and detail of this presentation, we will only be able to answer questions for 30-40 minutes following the presentation," district officials said.

People who cannot attend live can watch the recording, which will be recorded and shared on each school website and www.smmusd.org

"We are working on compiling a Frequently Asked Questions document as a result of questions from various stakeholder group meetings this month, town hall meetings and Let’s Talk submissions, and will post them online when complete," the district said.

The district had asked parents, teachers and secondary students to take a survey on distance learning and shared those results as well in both English and Spanish. The Santa Monica-Malibu Classroom Teachers Association conducted a teacher survey, as well, with the results included in this document for comparison.

There will be another upcoming school reopening survey

"Parents, staff, students and community members may submit comments through our Let’s Talk portal, clicking on the school reopening input button," officials said. "We will have a school reopening survey for parents, employees and secondary school students following the two town hall meetings to gather your feedback on the reopening models and identify your preference."

"Thank you to our parents and staff for your continued support of our students during this challenging time," officials said.
