Police arrested a 16-year-old student at Santa Paula High School Friday for allegedly possessing a handgun on campus, according to a statement Monday from Santa Paula Police.

The student remains in custody at the county's Juvenile Justice Center, the agency said in a news release.

Following up on information from social media, a school resource officer identified the student and worked with school staff and additional officers to locate the student and remove him from the classroom, the release said.

Officers found a handgun, magazine and ammunition in the student's backpack, then arrested the student and notified parents through the district.

Police asked that parents and guardians to keep an eye on what items students bring to campus and to monitor social media, cell phone and computer use.

"Remind students if they see something, say something," police said in the release.
