Santander Bank closing 19 branches in Massachusetts

Santander Bank says it plans to close more than a dozen branches across Massachusetts in the coming months.

The Boston-based bank plans to close a total of 19 branches in July and through August, in part due to many customers shifting totally over to online banking, a company spokesperson said.

“Like many industries, our customers’ preferences have changed, with more customers choosing to bank with us online,” the spokesperson said.

Branches slated to be shuttered include 6 in Boston, including the Downton Boston location. Other locations that will close include Ayer, Bedford, Braintree, Chestnut Hill, Dracut, Holliston, Lawrence, Marlboro, Needham, Attleboro, and Weston.

“We are reimagining the customer and employee experience by simplifying our processes, refining our branch footprint, and increasing our investment in digital capabilities to align with the evolving needs of our customers,” the spokesperson added.

Santander operates dozens upon dozens of other branches across the state.

Silicon Valley Bank, one of the nation’s largest banks, recently closed several locations in Massachusetts.
