Sara DeVries: It's not too late to start HDL's summer reading challenge

Herrick District Library’s Summer Challenge offers all kinds of options for readers looking to fill their summer with reading, learning, and fun. Whether you’re 4 years old or 94 years old, Herrick District Library’s Summer Challenge is for you. This year’s theme of "Choose Your Adventure" offers quite a few choices for catering the program to fit your needs and interests.

There are two ways to participate: keep a reading log of the number of books you’ve read, or complete a quest on a summer challenge game board. The game board allows participants to choose their character with options to play as a knight, mage, artisan, or noble.

Each character has several options for challenges to complete, earning points toward fulfilling their quest. Plenty of challenges involve reading a certain type of book, such as reading a book with a map inside, or a book that's been turned into a movie or television show. There are also challenges not directly tied to a book, such as “learn a new skill” or “attend an outdoor library program." Prizes will be awarded to all who complete their quest.

The medieval game board has been quite popular this year, with both children and adults. Participants tell us the summer challenge is more fun this year with the gamification and thematic elements involved. We also hear regularly how much people enjoy the freedom to choose the challenges that work best for them.

During the month of July, participants at any stage of the challenge are able to choose a free book while supplies last. Pick up a game board at either library location if you haven’t yet started, or stop by the library if you've already begun your quest to choose your book. Free books are available to participants of all ages — adults too.
