Sara DeVries: There's more to the story at your library

National Library Week is April 23-29 and the American Library Association’s theme for this year is “More to the Story." You probably know that your public library is the storehouse of thousands of stories available in multiple formats, from hardcover to digital. There's also so much more to know about your library.

Read magazines on your phone or bring a preloaded Kindle with multiple eBooks on vacation. Replace your one-credit per month paid Audible subscription with the ability to check out multiple digital audiobooks per month for free using HDL’s digital library.

Visit the library for free access to popular sites like LinkedIn Learning, ABC Mouse, or Ancestry. Check out a Nintendo Switch for use inside the library building or, starting next month, look for Nintendo Switch Lite consoles and Nintendo Switch games available for checkout.

Can’t make it to one of our two locations during open hours? Stop by a 24-hour library lending machine available in Park Township and Holland Heights.

Participate in events for all ages inside or outside the library. HDL offers storytimes and book groups, as well as informational programs and author visits. But the library also has more events than you might realize, including writing groups led by published authors, or entertaining events like Star Wars Day/Star Wars Trivia Night on May 4.

Build your graphic novel collection and celebrate comics on Free Comic Book Day on May 6. Register a team to try out a virtual reality game using Meta Quest VR glasses the week of May 15. There’s something for every age to explore at herrickdl.org/events.

Look for us at local school and daycare events, LAUP’s Fiesta, Juneteenth, the Holland Farmer’s Market, PRIDE Festival and more as we reach out and bring the library to the greater Holland community.

If you haven’t visited us in a while, stop by soon to see how much more there is to the story at your local library.
