Sarah Paulson Will Give You Nightmares in the First Trailer for Netflix’s Ratched

Sarah Paulson has a catalog of unforgettable characters—Marcia Clark in American Crime Story, Tammy in Ocean’s 8, plus the slew of people she’s played on American Horror Story. And now she’s adding someone new to her repertoire: Nurse Ratched.

That’s Mildred Ratched, specifically, a.k.a. the terrifying nurse you’ve tried to forget from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975). She’s one of film’s most notorious villains, and now we’re learning her backstory.

“From Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, Ratched is a suspenseful drama series that tells the origin story of asylum nurse Mildred Ratched,” a description from Netflix reads. “In 1947, Mildred arrives in Northern California to seek employment at a leading psychiatric hospital where new and unsettling experiments have begun on the human mind. On a clandestine mission, Mildred presents herself as the perfect image of what a dedicated nurse should be, but the wheels are always turning, and as she begins to infiltrate the mental health care system and those within it, Mildred’s stylish exterior belies a growing darkness that has long been smoldering within, revealing that true monsters are made, not born.”

From the description, you can glean that Sarah Paulson is pretty bone-chilling in this series. The trailer all but confirms that. Take a look for yourself, below:

“A lot of us are on the planet trying to figure out how to survive our childhoods, our environments, our circumstances. And to have an opportunity to do a deeper dive into this invented character that has become so pulsating with life for so many people, to figure out why she is so cold…so removed…,” Paulson said to Vanity Fair about playing Nursed Ratched. “By the time you get to the end of the first season, you will not wonder how and why Mildred became the way she did. You may question her actions, you may have judgment about it—but you will understand it. It will make sense to you.”

Ratched has an all-star supporting cast, including Cynthia Nixon, Gwendolyn Briggs, and Sharon Stone. The eight-episode series premieres September 18 on Netflix.
