Kaufmann was driving an SUV south on Indiana Avenue on the outside lane, just north of Artists Avenue. He entered the intersection and crashed into the side of the woman's car, causing it to overturn, the initial crash report said.

The woman was pronounced dead on the scene, along with a 68-year-old female passenger. Another 68-year-old female passenger in the car was transported to an area hospital, but she died from her injuries on September 16. Kaufmann was left with serious injuries.

He was booked into the Sarasota County Jail for vehicular homicide, three counts of DUI manslaughter and DUI property damage.
