High School Roundup (Feb. 13-18): Braden River wrestling captures first district title

SATURDAY

WRESTLING

TAMPA − The Braden River High wrestling team won the first district title in program history, winning the Class 2A-District 9 tournament at Jesuit High.

The Pirates scored 204 points to 192 for host Jesuit. Parrish Community High was fifth with 101 points, followed by Southeast High with 81.

Braden River placed seven wrestlers in the finals: 106-pounder Matthew Ireland, 120 Grady Murphy, 126 Josh Turner, 160 Gage Wiggins, 170 Mario Maltez, 182 Jessey Colas and 285 Bobby Pike. Ireland, Wiggins, Maltez and Colas captured titles.

All 13 Pirate wrestlers qualified for the 2A-Region 3 tournament next week at Charlotte High.

Gael Sanchez of Southeast won the 220-pound weight class.

BRADENTON − The Manatee High wrestling team won the Class 2A-District 10 title with 223.5 points, beating runner-up Countryside (178) and Palmetto (174)

The Hurricanes crowned four district champions: Luke Arthur (120-pound weight class), Julian SMith (152), Mason Miller (170) and Hamlet Rodriguez-Pena (285).

Manatee also had four runners-up: Jeson Carbajal (126), Jake Samuels (145), Hunter White (160) and Damontez McDowell (195).

Palmetto had Colton Alden (106) and Sam Herlihy (113) finish second.
