A total of 33 U.S. hospitals were among the top 250 ranked hospitals worldwide.

The top-ranked Florida hospital was the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, which ranked 18th overall. It earned a 76.95% score in the statistical ranking system, and performed "above average" for CMS infection and prevention measures.

The second ranked Florida hospital was the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Florida, at 45th nationally; followed by Tampa General Hospital at 92nd nationally and then Sarasota Memorial at 161.

SMH scored 64.98% and also performed above average in CMS infection prevention measures.

This is the fourth year that Newsweek, in collaboration with global market research and consumer data company Statista Inc., has published the global list.

Hospitals were selected based on medical performance indicators that included low mortality, complication and readmission rates, as well as recommendations from medical professionals and patient survey results.

Scores were calculated for each hospital in each of the three categories and weighted: Peer recommendation (50% national, 5% international), patient experience (15%), medical KPIs (30%).

Results are validated and checked for quality assurance by a global board of renowned medical experts.

The global rankings are published on the Newsweek website at: https://www.newsweek.com/worlds-best-hospitals-2022.

According to a news release from Sarasota Memorial, the hospital has made the list all four years and is the only hospital in Southwest Florida to make the list since the global rankings began in 2018.

While many medical institutions struggled with these challenges over the course of the pandemic, what has set the world's leading hospitals apart is their continued ability to deliver the highest-quality patient care and conduct critical medical research even as they focused on battling COVID, Nancy Cooper, Global Editor-in-Chief for Newsweek, said in the same statement.

The leading hospitals had clear missions, visionary leadership, and attract the best people focused on developing new approaches to care and making care better, she added.

“The ability and drive to continually innovate is key – and top talent is at the heart of that,” Cooper said. “Indeed, as the fourth annual ranking of the World's Best Hospitals by Newsweek and Statista shows, consistency in excellence is the hallmark of these institutions, with familiar names dominating the list.”

Newsweek said it compiles the list to help consumers discover the ways leading hospitals are shaping the future of medicine.
