Sarasota Memorial Hospital was named one of the nation's best hospitals on an annual ranking of the top health care systems in the U.S.

The 2022 Fortune/Merative Top 100 Hospitals Rankings, which analyzed publicly available Medicare data from 2,650 hospitals across the country, put Sarasota Memorial Hospital among the 100 best in the U.S., according to the rankings, released on Thursday.

Sarasota Memorial was also named to Fortune/Merative's list of the nation's top 40 teaching hospitals.

According to Forbes/Merative, if all hospitals performed at the same level as those on the top 100 list, 104,000 additional lives could be saved in-hospital, 55,000 additional patients could be complication-free and $12.5 billion could be saved on in-patient care.

The top hospitals had lower inpatient mortality, fewer patient complications, fewer hospital-acquired infections, lower 30-day mortality and 30-day readmission rates and sent patients home sooner than others, according to Sarasota Memorial. The hospitals also kept expenses low while maintaining healthy finances, scored higher on patient ratings of their overall hospital experience, demonstrated nursing excellence and embraced data and "innovative technology."

Sarasota Memorial has been on the Top 100 list for six years, according to Fortune/Merative.

A Sarasota Memorial news release also noted that its teaching program also received recognition, listed as one of the top three teaching hospitals in Florida and top 40 in the nation.

The 100 Top Hospitals study has been conducted annually since 1993. Hospitals do not apply or pay for this being involved in the ranking and do not pay to promote their award, the release stated.
