Newly released images from Maxar Technologies show extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure in the besieged cities of Soledar and Bakhmut in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.

Maxar released imagery from August 1, 2022, and contrasted it with images captured between January 3 and 10, 2023, to show damage in the eastern Donbas cities following intense fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces.

The imagery shows bomb craters in fields and roads around Bakhmut, as well as destroyed homes, schools and buildings in Soledar.

On January 10, the head of Russian mercenary group Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said his fighters had encircled Ukrainian forces and held effective control of Soledar.

The claim was quickly rejected by the Ukrainian brigade defending Soledar, as well as Yuriy Butusov, a journalist embedded with troops in the area.

In an assessment, the US-based Institute of War concluded Wagner had not gained control of Soledar. Credit: Maxar Technologies via Storyful
