Satellite Imagery Shows Roof Collapse at Iran's Evin Prison Following Fire

Satellite imagery captured on October 14 and 17 shows Iran’s Evin Prison before and after a fire broke out amid deadly clashes reported on Saturday, October 15.

Citing Iranian officials, London-based channel Iran International reported on Monday the death toll from Saturday had risen from four to eight after prisoners hospitalized in critical condition died. The causes of the additional deaths were not disclosed, the channel reported, but it said the first four deaths were due to smoke inhalation.

Iran’s state Islamic Republic News Agency cited the Judiciary Media Center as saying a prison workshop caught fire during a “conflict between prisoners,” specifically prisoners of “financial conviction and theft,” according to a machine translation.

In footage circulating on October 15, gunshot-like explosions and booms can be heard near the prison as smoke and flames rise from the complex.
