Saturday is International Coffee Day! This local event will celebrate the drink's history

It's time to celebrate the drink everyone loves: coffee.

Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world and America's favorite beverage, according to the German-based market and consumer database Statista. The drink dates back to ninth century Ethiopia, where the first cup of joe was served and coffee is still cultivated today.

To celebrate the popular beverage, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and Drip Coffee Lounge are hosting an event on International Coffee Day, Saturday, Oct. 1.

The event, titled "From Bean to Brew: How Coffee Spills from Ethiopia," is from 10 a.m. to noon at the Drip Coffee Lounge in Colerain. It is free and open to the public.

During the event, Abdi Cheik, owner of Drip Coffee Lounge and one of the few Black roasters in the country, will share his journey from Ethiopia to Cincinnati. Cheik will discuss the importance of diversity and equitable wages in the coffee industry for farmers and producers of color.

The event will include traditional Ethiopian food and Ethiopian-grown coffee in celebration of coffee history and culture.
