Chambers weathered a slow start and beat Covenant Day, 67-57, in the Charlotte Hoops Challenge at Harding High School on Saturday.

The Cougars played much of the first half without star forward Maurio Hanson, who had some early foul trouble.

“I think it shows the potential of this team,” Cougars’ coach Brian Frasier said. “We’ve got a lot of guys that can contribute in so many different ways. We’ve been off a week and this is just our second game. So, it was a bit lethargic out on the floor but we were able to come out with the win, so I’ll take it.”

In the first half, Covenant Day took advantage of Chambers’ rust, hitting shots and forcing several turnovers.

Later in the half, the Cougars began to find their offensive rhythm with Jordan Patton playing a central role instead of Hanson, normally the centerpiece of their offense.

“I think we could have run our sets a little better,” Patton said. “Maurio (Hanson) got in foul trouble which kind of threw plans off a little bit. So, I had to step up and get the rebounds.”

The third quarter was played at a faster paced, more of what Chambers was looking for. Hanson returned to the floor and asserted himself in the paint, grabbing several rebounds and scoring inside.

Chambers continued to push the pace into the fourth quarter, sealing the victory. Next, the Cougars will host the nation’s No. 8 team, Myers Park, on Tuesday.

“I’m looking for a testy environment (against Myers Park),” Frasier said. “I’m looking for them to play hard and for us to play hard as well. I’m looking for a really good game and hopefully people can get their money’s worth out of it.”

Three who made a difference

Maurio Hanson, Chambers: Despite his first-half foul trouble, Hanson had a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

Jordan Patton, Chambers: Patton stepped up for the Cougars when Hanson and Marcus Kerr were on the bench.

Elijah Green, Covenant Day: The Lions’ senior point guard led all scorers in the game with 22 points. He was 4-of-9 from 3-point range and also had five assists.

What’s next?

Chambers will host Myers Park on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. Covenant Day will travel to Wesleyan Christian Academy, also on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m.
